Beyond the Buzzwords: How Leaders Make or Break Digital Change

I've sat through countless conversations where the focus of "digital transformation" is all about the technology, AI, cloud, automation, or the latest platform. Don't get me wrong, these are important. But in my experience, it's rarely the technology that determines whether change sticks. It's the leadership and the people.
I've seen organisations with the best tools available fail to get it right because leadership wasn't clear, consistent, or engaged. And I've seen teams with far fewer resources thrive simply because their leaders set a steady course, built trust, and brought people with them.
For me, it's like captaining a ship in uncharted waters. Technology gives you the sails, but it's leadership that keeps you off the rocks. People don't look to us as leaders to predict every wave; they look for someone who can hold steady when the storm rolls in.
In my own journey, I've learnt that effective digital leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about showing up with clarity and purpose, even when things are uncertain.
I'm not saying I know all the answers or "tricks", but I've seen success when we:
Put people first
Listen and empower our teams
Help them see how technology can make their work easier or more meaningful
It's also about being willing to learn alongside your team, not standing apart from them.
The leaders I respect most aren't the ones chasing buzzwords. They're the ones who strip away the noise, support their people, and keep everyone focused on what matters most, while creating an environment where it's safe to try, fail, and grow.
So when I look at digital change, I don't ask, "What's the latest tool we should be using?" My first question is always, "How am I showing up as a leader to help my people thrive through this?"
Beyond the buzzwords, it's leadership, not technology, that can make or break digital transformation.
How are you showing up differently for your team as you lead through change?
